Jang Si-hyeon, Master's Student, Develops 'Non-Whitening UV-Blocking Sunscreen'Jang Si-hyeon, a Master's student in the Dept.of Carbon Composites Convergence Materials Engineering at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), developed a sunscreen material technology that transmits visible light while selectively blocking ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
This research was published under the title ‘Hollow Polystyrene Nanoparticles Inducing Nanocavities in Newtonian Fluids for Selective Visible Transparency and Ultraviolet Blocking’ in the latest issue of the international journal ACS Applied Polymer Materials.
Conventional sunscreens are broadly classified into organic and inorganic UV filters. Organic filters use organic compounds that absorb ultraviolet radiation, but issues such as durability and heat generation during use have been raised.
In contrast, inorganic filters such as zinc oxide (ZnO) or titanium dioxide (TiO₂) can effectively block UV radiation, but they also scatter visible light, resulting in a whitening (white cast) effect where2026-09-21

Smartphone Photography Enables Screening Method for Degradation of 2D SemiconductorsJeonbuk National University (JBNU) research team led by Professor Kwang-wook Park of the Electronic Materials Engineering Program presented an image-based screening method that uses photographs taken with a smartphone to quickly check the degradation state of two-dimensional layered semiconductor hafnium disulfide (HfS2) thin films prior to detailed analysis.
HfS2 is a layered semiconductor in the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) family with strong potential for electronic and optoelectronic device applications. However, it is sensitive to oxygen and moisture in air and suffers from rapid oxidation. Under high humidity, its characteristic color fades within days and the Raman signal decreases significantly, indicating large changes in its intrinsic physical and chemical properties.
This study is a follow-up to the team’s previously published work on ambient degradation of HfS2 thin films (DOI: 10.1016/j.mssp.2025.109471). In the prior study, JBNU PhD candidate Joo-2026-09-18
